Batman: The Dark Knight Returns

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is set twenty years into an alternate future. In the absence of superheroes, ordinary criminals run amok (all the super-villains having been incarcerated or otherwise killed), and a gang called the "Mutants" made up of schoolchildren terrorize Gotham City. Batman has been retired from crime fighting for ten years following the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin. Wayne funds the rehabilitation of Harvey Dent ("Two-Face"), leading to his release from a mental hospital, but upon re-entering society, Dent returns to crime. Wayne dons the Batman costume again and apprehends Dent, but in an increasingly media obsessed society, the populace debates publicly whether Batman is a savior or a menace.

Carrie Kelley, a 13-year-old girl whom Batman rescues, spends her lunch money on a Robin costume and finds Batman at the city dump, where he is fighting the Mutants. There, Batman, in a moment of insecurity about his age, foolishly accepts a challenge to battle the Mutants' leader in personal combat and is defeated. However, Kelley causes a distraction to allow Batman to incapacitate the villain and the police arrest the Mutant Leader. Kelley returns with Batman in the tank-like Batmobile to the Batcave performing some basic first aid to stem his multiple lacerations. Once home, Batman takes Carrie on as the new Robin against Alfred's objections. The Mayor of Gotham City decides to negotiate with the leader of the Mutants, with one eye on the upcoming election, but the Mutant leader kills the Mayor in his prison cell. With Gordon's cooperation, the leader is allowed to escape from jail and Batman, taking advantage of his experience in combat, defeats him in a rematch in front of the assembled Mutant gang, which then disbands, disgusted by their leader's failure.

The Joker, who has spent the last decade catatonic, sees the media reports on the return of the Batman, snaps out of his funk and convinces his psychiatrist that he regrets his misdeeds. Seeking to discredit Batman, the psychiatrist appears with the Joker on a late-night show (reminiscent of David Letterman). Gordon finally retires and is replaced by Ellen Yindel, who is not a fan of Batman and whose first act as Commissioner is to issue an arrest warrant. She is also suspicious of the Joker and orders some of the police force to be on hand during the TV appearance. While the bulk of the police attempt to apprehend Batman, the Joker murders everyone in the television studio and escapes. Batman and Robin learn that the Joker is planning a mass killing at the country fair, where Batman defeats the Joker in a violent showdown. Batman has come to the realization that if he had indeed killed the Joker earlier instead of putting him in jail, where he would escape again and again (a common superhero theme), many innocent lives would have been saved. Batman comes short of killing the Joker by merely breaking his neck, unable to cross that line no matter how much he tells himself he should have; the Joker expresses disappointment in Batman for not killing him. He twists his own broken neck, effectively killing himself, intending for the police to charge Batman with murder.

Meanwhile, the Soviet Union has invaded the Corto Maltese, a Caribbean Island not far from the USA, and the American response to the invasion is to unleash Superman on the attacking troops. He is able to deter the attempted conquest, and in response, the Soviets fire a nuclear missile at the continental U.S. Superman is able to redirect it from its intended target to a remote desert, where it detonates. However, it turns out the missile was actually designed to cause a massive electromagnetic pulse and send a huge cloud of dust into the atmosphere, precipitating a brief but intense nuclear winter. Superman is nearly killed by the missile's detonation, as the atmospheric effects cut off his access to the yellow sunlight that provides his power and invulnerability.

As the electromagnetic pulse destroys all electrical equipment, and the country is plunged into cold and darkness, all the major American cities descend into chaos. Batman rounds up the former Mutants, including those who now call themselves the "Sons of the Batman" ("SOB" for short), to stop looting and ensure the flow of needed supplies. Gotham becomes the safest city in America, and the US government, embarrassed by this, orders Superman to take Batman down at any cost. Having been warned of the government's plans by Green Arrow, Batman confronts Superman at the very same place where Wayne's parents were murdered decades earlier, "Crime Alley". He dons a powered armor suit and readies various gadgets, including an arrow with a synthesized-kryptonite tip to be fired by Green Arrow. The two face off, causing massive infrastructure damage and just as Batman defeats Superman, he appears to die of a heart attack. Concurrently, Alfred destroys the Batcave and Wayne Manor but suffers a fatal stroke as Robin draws away the police in the Batmobile.

The series comes to a close as we learn that Batman faked his own death. During the funeral in which Selina Kyle blames Superman for Batman's death, his heart begins to beat again which Superman hears. He gives Carrie a knowing wink and walks away. Batman leads Robin, Green Arrow, and the rest of the Sons of Batman into the caverns beyond what was the Batcave and prepares to one day battle not criminals, but the corrupt authorities that had demanded he be neutralized. He figures this will be a good life, "good enough."

Ken Loachs's latest film, THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY, explores a widely undocumented age of World History. Both a family melodrama and war film, the 2006 Palme d'Or winner sheds light on the nexus of the struggle of the Irish in the 20th century.

Cillian Murphy plays "Damien" a pacifist doctor whose leaves his small town to study in London. After witnessing a series of sadistic acts by the British, Damien abandons his plans to defend his country. He joins his brother Teddy (Padraic Delaney) in a guerrilla campaign with the newly formed Irish Republican Army. The brothers take arms and find themselves in world of escalating violence against the Black and Tans. When the Treaty of 1921 is implemented, the two brothers find themselves on opposite ends of a Civil War that hinges on the definition of "Freedom."

The most powerful aspect in this film is its authenticity. It is shot beautifully, mostly in natural light, on location in County Cork, Ireland. By limiting his area to a small town, it allows us to accessibility into each of the characters lives. There are no faceless soldiers; each one has an inferred history by merely living in this town. The audience feels as if they are citizens and simply watching the events unfold.

By choosing fictional over historical figures, it gives a compelling look at how the decisions of the politicians change the lives of the average Mick on the street. County Cork and its people are a long way from Dublin and Michael Collin's negotiating table.

Often glossed over in films about war are the various viewpoints. Unlike any of the World Wars, this is a fight that has evolved over hundreds of years with only the occasional victory. Yet every victory opens a new multi layered conflict. There is never an easy answer. Every single character in this movie is faced with a crossroads.

Even in Blockbusters as BATMAN BEYOND and RED EYE, no one can argue Cillian Murphy's commitment to his characters. He brings that same commitment to the conflicted Doctor who must kill and heal. Murphy gives a performance that is honest, vulnerable and understated. Without a doubt, this film establishes him as one of the finest actors out there.

Commitment from Murphy is not a surprise. However, the performances of the non-actors are equally impressive. An older woman, in her only scene, speaks to a victim tortured by the British. She repeatedly states "I need to clean the chicken coop." It's devastating and you feel as if you have known this woman since you were a kid. This scene stuck to me for days.

There was one problem I had. I thought the British atrocities were a bit over dramatic.

Recently, I was talking with this middle aged Brit I just met. I told him I had just seen this new film. I explained it was a work of fiction, but I wasn't sure how much of the brutality of the British Empire was true.

He said "I haven't seen the movie, but it's true."

With St. Patty's day this weekend, take a break from the green beers and catch THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY.

Hollywood Problems

The problem with Hollywood having any impact on the world outside of entertainment is their lack of real-world knowledge. If these people do not live in the real world and face real-world problems with issues such as racism, gender discrimination, poverty, and any issue possible that normal, everyday working-class citizens face, why should they try to solve these problems unless it were for money, further endorsement, ratings, or other such monetary or reputation boosters?

Another problem Hollywood has is that its general opinion differs widely from the general opinion by the average person. American citizens realize this, and this creates huge mistrust between these two societies. If a celebrity is standing at a podium speaking his or her mind about something he or she heard someone else say and then regurgitates, and it doesn't coincide with the views of the public, this looks like the celebrity is trying to persuade people to think the same way. It comes across poorly.

Furthermore, many of the views by celebrities are extremely negative. Global warming, problems with the government, discrimination, the war on terror, abortion, the economy, rising gas prices these are all issues which are important to the country. All Americans think about these situations. However, most try and remain optimistic that things will change for the better. Many Americans are still very conservative, however, and would like to find a solution which fits with traditions. Celebrities are extremely liberal, and this scares most Americans who are not used to so much pessimism.

Negativity is highly contagious. Actors/actresses, singers, and other entertainment folk constantly get married and then divorced, do drugs or become alcoholics and go to rehab, drive drunk and go to jail, or speak negatively about the President of the United States simply to increase ratings. These types of problems spread to other parts of the country, which causes a ripple effect throughout the world where America has much influence.

Most of the time, everyday people watch the television and laugh. We barely pay any attention unless what is said is incredibly bold and/or shocking. However, it does seem lately that these types of people are gaining more attention. Is it due to the lack of alternative entertainment, or is it that people are starting to actually care what celebrities say? Who knows, but the more attention is afforded to these people, the less respect our country will get from others.

The Velvet Underground's debut album

The Velvet Underground's debut album "The Velvet Underground & Nico" was one of the best and most influential of all time. (If you're one of the few not already possessing a copy, its the one with the banana on the sleeve. You'll have seen it in the music stores many time as you browse through the racks.) It set an agenda which led directly to David Bowie, the New York 70's scene, punk rock and an entire generation of musicians and music. That much is well known and few would disagree.

For a short time in 2007 an alternative take on this legendary album was available for free download and many people took advantage of the opportunity.

The download consisted of an acetate of an alternative set of versions of the tracks on the album which was originally purchased in 2002 by a guy called Warren Hill at a Montreal flea market. He paid a bargain 75 cents. It is thought to be one of only two in existence. (An acetate was a 'soft' pressing of work being undertaken in the studio where something was being recorded, and was made so that those involved could take it away to listen to outside the studio to decide what else needed to be done when they returned. They are very, very rare items. They have, of course, been superseded by digital recording methods meaning that tracks-in- progress can be taken away in an iPod, but were, at the time a very important part of the process of music recording.)

In 2007, the acetate was posted for sale on ebay and a bid of $155,401 was made, but unfortunately payment was not made. As a result, a closed bidding process was introduced for it. It was eventually sold for a large, but undisclosed, amount.

During the period when the sale was ongoing, the acetate was converted into MP3 files and posted on the Internet, so everyone could hear what musical gems the rare disc contains. There was no charge for downloading them and many took advantage of the opportunity.

The acetate contains alternate takes & mixes of songs recorded for the album, but never included, with different guitar lines or vocal parts. The website said that 'Velvet Underground fans will find this a revelatory listen, while those who don't really know what's going on will probably not understand the true value of this recording.' Believe me when I say this was a truly historic find! This is probably one of the five most valuable 'records' in music history.

Here's an ironic moment: just as I'm off to the Mood Disorder Symposium hosted by Johns Hopkins, I decide to pick up some water and sunflower seeds for the road trip (no, there isn't a connection between them and sanity). I look over and see the US Weekly cover story: "Living With Mental Illness" with Britney's face gracing the cover. And I think to myself, "Huh. Maybe I don't need to go to the symposium after all. Maybe the editors of the splashy magazine will tell me all I need to know about my bipolar disorder."

But the article wasn't as bad as I thought. I remember a year ago reading a story in US Weekly about Britney that put allegations of her taking antidepressants in the same category as her panty-less photos. And I was a little … how do I say? Ticked off.
But Joey Bartolomeo, the author of this week's cover story, did much more homework than the article of a year ago. He interviewed two doctors. Hey! That's progress. And not ones that practice Scientology. Among one of the more helpful paragraphs:
Treating bipolar disorder offers few guarantees. As Malibu-based psychiatrist David Martorano, who does not treat the singer, tells US, "Some people, even with effective medications, have a rocky course where the illness comes and goes over the rest of their lives." While drugs like Lithium and Depakote can stabilize the condition, therapy, says Beverly Hills-based Dr. Arnold L. Gillberg, "is an effort to understand the person and modify the behavior."

What wasn't needed, in my opinion, was the part about Britney seeming "out of it now," "blurry around the edges." Like the people who need treatment for their bipolar disorder need another reason not to get it. Sure, another doctor, Melvin G. McInnis of the University of Michigan Depression Center, weighs in saying that high doses of some drugs can cause the "cognitive dulling," that it is a trial and error until you get the optimum dose.
Right after that, we are taken to a box listing the side effects of common medications: weight gain, hair loss, thyroid issues. And that "40 percent relapse in a year" (according to Martorano), and "75 percent at five years."

I guess it just reminded me too much of an Oprah magazine article my friend Liz handed me the morning of my consultation with Johns Hopkins two years ago: a five-page feature all about antidepressants zapping your creativity, your spunk, your soul. It was a lovely article to read an hour before meeting with a team of brain experts.
For people out there just coming to terms with their bipolar disorder, I want to give them some positive statistics—that the majority of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder recover! And they go on to do great things, using their gifts of creativity and sensitivity and intuition to make this world a better place! Trust me, I was just at a symposium hearing such stories.
I wouldn't want persons just now identifying their symptoms to get even more confused and afraid to seek treatment. While the article was much more substantive than the usual tabloid feature, it lacked the thread of hope I so wanted to read.
Because I truly believe Britney's story will be one of hope, that will inspire countless others to get the help they need.

The circling rumors of Spider-Man 4 and the returning cast are spiraling around as of right now. Something that we do know however is that Spider-Man 4 is a movie that will happen. Although It is still very unclear whether the likes of Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will be returning.

From a news report from May of 2008, James Vanderbilt, announced as the screenwriter for upcoming Spider-Man movies, is writing both the scripts for Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5. Both of these movies may be shot at the same time if this is the case. More news came out during this current month, June of 2008, that Sony has pushed the movies’ releases back to May of 2011.

I’ve been reading for a couple months and love the site. Not sure if this is newsworthy but you can decide. I’m a student at the University of Pennsylvania and a few of my friends involved in student government told me that Transformers 2 will be shooting on campus in one of the nicer fraternities this summer. Im guessing these scenes will involve Shia/Jonah at college. Michael Bay was also seen on campus a few weeks back, so I guess that sort of confirms that the film will be partially shot here. Thought you might like to know.

The future holds a variety of sequals to some recent movies. It never seems like the original is just enough for Hollywood. In 2009, we expect to see the movie sequals for Night at the Museum and Transformers.

Night at the Museum 2: Escape from the Smithsonian, will include characters from the original movie as well as new ones. Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Owen Wilson and Dick Van Dyke will be returning to the cast. Night at the Museum 2 will come to theaters on Memorial Day Weekend on May 22, 2009. This will be the first film to ever be shot at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.

20th Century Fox released this summary of the movie:

The centerpiece of the film will be bringing to life the Smithsonian Institution, which houses the world’s largest museum complex with more than 136 million items in its collections, ranging from the plane Amelia Earhart flew on her nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic and Al Capone’s rap sheet and mug shot to Dorothy’s ruby red slippers and Archie Bunker’s lounge chair.

Another sequel, Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen directed by Michael Bay, will likely be another box office success when it comes out on June 26, 2009. There have not been many details released about this film yet, but a little more information visit MTV Movies Blog’s Interview with Megan Fox where she claims “It’s just going to be a badass movie.”
